Dohar vs Comforter vs Blanket: What to Use in Which Season

Quick answer: Use a cotton dohar for most of the year in India, from spring through monsoon and the first cool nights of autumn. Switch to a comforter when nights get properly cold, and add a blanket on top in peak winter or in very cold rooms. For hot summer nights in an AC room, a light dohar or a cooling dohar is the better choice.

Dohar, comforter and blanket are words many of us use interchangeably, but they are built differently and suit different seasons. Picking the right one means you sleep comfortably without sweating under too much layering or shivering under too little. This guide explains the difference in plain terms and tells you what to use in each season.

What is a dohar?

A dohar is a thin, layered bed cover, traditionally made of soft cotton fabric stitched together. It is light, breathable and easy to wash, which is why it is a favourite for AC rooms and mild weather.

Our Super Soft Reversible White & Blue Triangles Cotton Dohar is a good example:

  • Material: 100% cotton
  • Reversible design, so you get two looks in one
  • Double size: 225 x 240 cm (88 x 94 inch), ₹1,399
  • Single size: 144 x 220 cm (56 x 86 inch), ₹949

Best for: AC rooms all year, spring, monsoon and early autumn nights.

What is a comforter?

A comforter is a thicker, filled quilt. It has an outer fabric with a soft filling inside, which traps air and holds warmth. The thickness is usually described by GSM (grams per square metre) of filling. Higher GSM generally means a heavier, warmer comforter.

Best for: winter nights, from the first cold spell to peak winter.

What is a blanket?

A blanket is a single layer of woven or knitted fabric, with no filling. It can be used alone on mildly cold nights or layered over a dohar or comforter when it gets very cold.

The Finley 300 GSM Brown Geometric Single Blanket is made of polyester, measures 160 x 220 cm (62 x 82 inch) and costs ₹699. It is lightweight and machine washable on a gentle cold cycle.

Best for: extra layering in winter, sofa naps, guest beds and travel.

What about a cooling dohar?

A cooling dohar is made for hot weather. Our Grey Arctic-Cool Cooling Dohar uses a special fabric that feels cool on contact. As per the product details, its dual-side cooling can stay up to 5°C cooler than room temperature. It can also be used as a duvet cover in other seasons.

  • Double: ₹2,499
  • Single: ₹1,999

Best for: hot summer nights, with or without AC, and people who sweat during sleep.

What to use in which season

Summer (roughly March to June)

In AC rooms, a cotton dohar is ideal. It keeps the chill of the AC off without trapping heat. If you feel hot even under a thin sheet, try a cooling dohar.

Monsoon (roughly July to September)

Humidity makes heavy bedding feel sticky. A breathable cotton dohar is the most comfortable choice. Being easy to wash and quicker to dry than a filled comforter also helps in damp weather.

Early winter (roughly October to November)

This is the switch-over period. Many homes still manage with a dohar, but on cooler nights a light comforter, such as a 180 GSM one, works well.

Peak winter (roughly December to January)

In north India and hill areas, move to a heavier comforter like 240 GSM. On the coldest nights, add a blanket on top. In south and coastal India, where winters are mild, a 180 GSM comforter or a dohar plus blanket is usually enough.

Quick tips before you buy

  • Match the size to your bed. Choose double for queen and king beds, single for single beds and kids.
  • Own at least one of each. A dohar and a comforter together cover almost the whole year for most Indian homes.
  • Check wash care. Our microfiber comforters recommend dry clean or a cold hand wash, with no bleach and no ironing.
  • Think about layering. A blanket over a dohar is a flexible option when the weather keeps changing.

Frequently asked questions

Is a dohar warmer than a blanket?
Not usually. A dohar is made to be light and breathable. A blanket of similar size is usually warmer, and a filled comforter is warmer than both.

Can I use a dohar in winter?
Yes, in mild winters or in well-heated rooms. In colder places, use a dohar as a base layer and add a blanket on top, or switch to a comforter.

What GSM comforter is best for Indian winters?
A 180 GSM comforter suits mild to moderate cold. For colder north Indian winters, a heavier fill such as 240 GSM gives more warmth.

Which is best for an AC room in summer?
A cotton dohar is the classic choice. If you want something that feels cool to the touch, a cooling dohar is designed specifically for hot summer nights.

Can I wash a comforter at home?
For our microfiber comforters, the care label suggests dry clean or hand wash in cold water, without bleach. Cotton dohars and the Finley blanket are easier to wash at home.
