Quick answer: a double bedsheet is made for a double bed of about 5 × 6 ft, and a king size bedsheet for a king bed of about 6 × 6.5 ft. If your mattress is 6 ft wide or more, buy king size: a double bedsheet will not tuck in properly on a king bed.

How much bigger than the mattress should a bedsheet be?
A flat bedsheet needs extra fabric on every side to cover the mattress depth and tuck underneath. Our premium king bedsheets are 108 × 108 in (270 × 270 cm). On a 72 × 78 in king mattress, that leaves about 18 inches on each side and about 15 inches at the head and foot: enough to cover a thick mattress and tuck in neatly.
If your mattress is very thick, or you want a sheet that never comes loose, choose a fitted bedsheet. Our king fitted sheets are made for a 72 × 78 in mattress up to 12 in (30 cm) deep, with elastic all round.
King vs double: which one should you buy?
- Buy king size if your bed is 6 ft wide or more, if your mattress is thicker than about 8 inches, or if you like a generous drape over the sides.
- Buy double if your bed is about 5 ft wide and you want a neat fit without extra fabric to tuck.
- Not sure? King size is the safer choice: a slightly larger sheet can be tucked deeper, but a small sheet cannot be stretched.
What about thread count?
Thread count (TC) is the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric. A higher thread count usually feels smoother and denser. Our ranges:
